The Seagull Newspaper

The Seagull Newspaper is written and compiled by a team of prisoners at HMP Haverigg and published three times per year. The normal print-run is 4,000 copies which are distributed across the local community and through Churches Together in Cumbria and Cumbria Probation Trust.

The aim is to create a channel of communication between HMP Haverigg and Cumbria residents.

In 2009 The Seagull received an Arthur Koestler Award.

Since inception, over twenty prisoners have worked directly on the project with many more contributing smaller pieces of work. Some have developed an interest in writing, whereas others have become proficient in graphic design. Eight men working on The Seagull have gained formal journalism qualifications.

It is hoped to develop an on-line electronic version of The Seagull.
